Helen J. Nicholson was born in Northern Ireland, and educated in Belfast, in Oadby, and at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford. She holds a doctorate from the University of Leicester. Her thesis was the basis of her first book (1993), which studied medieval views of the Templars, the Hospitallers and the Teutonic knights. Since then she has written books on the crusades, the Templars, the Hospitallers, medieval warfare, the trial of the Templars, the Templars' everyday lives, and the debates about the Templars. She has recently published a book on Queen Sybil of Jerusalem, and has completed a book on women's involvement in crusading. She is Emerita Professor at Cardiff University, occasionally appears on the TV, radio, or in podcasts, and also maintains a 'Frequently Answered Questions' page on the Crusades and on the Templars.

This book is a good starting point for anyone interested in reading up on medieval warfare. Its chronological sweep is very broad, and while it focuses on Western and Central Europe, it deals reasonably well with conflict between the peoples of these regions and others that they came into conflict with. The breadth of the work limits the amount of detail provided, but the author includes some effective examples. One real asset here, especially to the student, is that she surveys the recent literature and debates in different subfields, and provides references to key works that one can go to in order to learn more about them. The author also does her best to avoid overgeneralization, which is particularly helpful in her discussions of topics like feudalism and knighthood. While there are some factual or contextual errors here and there, there are not too many of these, and they do not significantly detract from the quality of the work. Undergraduates with no background in medieval history may find that the author assumes that they know more than they do, but anyone with some background in the field will find the book very useful. This is not a "battle book" with lots of ripping yarns, but it will help the reader to understand medieval warfare as described in such books, as well as in the chronicles and fictional literature from the time period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Theory and Practice

One day I was researching medieval warfare and by accident I came across this book. The title drew me in the most. As with so many things in history (especially medieval) the difference between what we think it was like as opposed to what was practiced is often not as clear-cut. I applaud the author’s use of terminology in words such as knight, and showing that not every knight was a cavalryman and not every cavalryman was noble. I really enjoyed how she was able to show how warfare is to be understood in post Roman Europe and the transition to the more classical medieval time we are so familiar with today (although not as well understood). For example that a knight in the pre-Carolingian era was any horse man, not necessarily a shock cavalry and that such a term changed overtime to a meaning of nobility. Her explanation of social organization and its relation to recruitment and arming of armies was fantastic. What she really challenges is the “feudal” idea of war. She is tackling a large subject over a long period of time. She is deciphering phrases and words to fit contexts and time periods. In all I think she did a fabulous job. However I found that her book did lack in some specific details. First is her interpretation of Bernard Bachrach book on Carolingian warfare, which if found to prove that the Frankish armies were just as well drilled, trained and equipped as the old Roman Legions and that they did in fact have a quasi- standing/ professional (to the point that they were trained fighters) army. Lastly in terms of training she talks a lot about knight and the nobility who as she presents having leisure time could actually train for war, yet she does not present any convincing argument as to how the vast majority of an army was trained on such quick notices. Even Roman Legions trained and drilled to the point that they could perform manoeuvres easily, many of which these farmer-soldiers were asked to do. We have to admit that regardless of how or when such training took place that it was no doubt enough to create a well organized and disciplined force to defeat enemies time and again, but the how and when are never fully answered. Despite all this I very much enjoyed the book but I would also suggest that if you are going to try this book to take a look at Bachrach’s Carolingian Warfare and Maurice Keen’s Medieval Warfare, two great books that will definitely help to bring more light on to such a complex subject.

3.0 out of 5 stars 中世西欧軍事史ガイドブック
Reviewed in Japan on September 23, 2005
