Awesome little scope

Awesome little scope
I'm a biologist and I bought a couple of these to take outside and look at certain parts of plants. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that I'd probably end up breaking or losing. So far I'm happy with my choice. The scope is TINY. Smaller than I was expecting, but in a good way. The magnification is nowhere near 45x, probably closer to 20x. That being said, it provides all the magnification I need and the LED light is extremely useful. Durability-wise, it feels a bit flimsy (made of plastic, not metal, made in China) but it's held up to a couple weeks sharing a pocket with a camera and cellphone.Overall, this is a small, cheap scope. It's definitely worth the money, especially if you're like me and tend to lose and break things.

This little baby does what the discription says. I was able to get great microscopic details that would be equivalent to a larger microscope. I know there are higher level mini microscopes on Amazon but this one can match the basic lab microscope one might have used in school or a lab. It's almost entirely made out of plastic but don't let that fool you. You will just need to handle it gently since it's so delicate making it easy to break, especially the little light switch that slides from left to right. When I first opened the package to this I laughed and thought, "you got to be kidding me?" It's so cute and tiny with it's little leather pouch but the end result is genius and fantastic on the price as well.

This little gadget is pretty fun, especially for the cost. It's smaller than I thought from the picture, but I believe the measurements are accurate, I just didn't think to look at those. It's about as big around as an AA battery, so it would fit well in a pocket or purse. While it's not exactly professional grade, I think it's pretty awesome for the cost. I bought it to take a closer look at my calligraphy nibs to see what I'm doing when I sharpen/hone the edges. Works great for that, and I know I'll find dozens of other uses, too. The LED lights are super bright. I think this would be a great gift for a kid of a certain age (you know, one who won't eat it), who is interested in nature or science or pretending to solve crimes. It works best when you follow the directions, and set the object on a table and then hold the instrument almost touching your object, but you can just hold it to your eye and bring the object to the lens, although it's harder to get your object into focus that way. You really need to think of it as a mini microscope, not a magnifying lens. I really don't know if it's 45x or not since I have nothing to compare it to. Also, take notice that they give a REALLY long time for shipping (like 6 weeks or something), although mine arrived much faster. Anyway, works great; recommended for the cost.

I ordered this scope to help with hobbies, primarily - electronics, high photo detail, and the occasional splinter removal. The optics are good and the light is VERY BRIGHT - almost too bright for me, but the main reason I decided to add a comment is that the unit is very small.

You have to have your eye right up to it, like a regular microscope, in order to see anything, since the eyepiece is very small. I wear eyeglasses, so I had to lose the glasses in order to use this at all - you cannot get your eyes close enough with glasses on. People who do not wear glasses, or younger folks would maybe not have this problem, but even after you get your eyes in close enough, the area you can view is very small as well - due to the fact that this is a microscope, I am sire.

I took a moment to measure the unit - the eye opening where you "look" at the enlarged view is just under 1/4" wide, so you can imagine how close your eye must be to see anything. Once you are there, the view is good. If your light goes out, you're in trouble, because the light appears to be necessary to see anything, but again - the light included is more than bright enough.

The height of the unit is 1.5 inches - I thought for some reason from the pictures that it would be 3-4 inches tall, but it is actually very small. The barrels are about a 5/8" diameter. The unit does not stand up on its own- you DO have to hold it in place for whatever you are viewing. Construction is OK for the price, but I don't expect you should subject it to much abuse, or it feels like it may break.

Anyway, it is a decent product for the price, but wanted to warn you about the size, if that may be an issue for you.

This is a pretty nice little pocket magnifier. It's much smaller than I thought it would be, at 1-1/4 inches long. Magnification is about 6X or so, not 45X.

Field of view is pretty good, about a quarter of an inch across on a flat surface if you get right up close to the magnifier, appearing as about an inch and a half across magnified. It would be stressful on the eyes to use for for an extended period.
The image is nice, bright, and sharp, with some mild chromatic aberration (colorful fringes on high contrast areas) visible near the edges.
If you're looking for a tiny, well designed ~6X magnifier, this is a great choice. It's good for looking at knife edges, leaves, fingerprints, print color separations, and other things that are just a bit too small to see clearly with naked eyes.

The only thing I don't like is that it's not what it claims to be. At 45X magnification, a 1/4 inch field of view should appear almost a foot across, or more realistically, the apparent 1-1/2 inches that I see through the scope should be a magnification of an area only a 30th of an inch across.

These are fantastic little pocket scopes. A very few small sort comings and this would actually be a serious instrument.

First you have to take into consideration it's size. It is VERY handy. I have one with me all of the time, because it's just that easy to carry around. The next thing, the optics are surprising. Normally a plastic magnifier this size wouldn't provide such bright, clear images. After that, remember that this thing cost very little!

Bright large images from your pocket. A great gift, every one I give one to loves em.

EDIT: Five years later I am still using this EVERY DAY! I work in very bright light, so I don't bother to replace the batteries. But on the few occasions that I am in lower light I have noticed the light switch has grown weak. Still it works like a charm with little effort. This might be the best value for the price I have ever gotten. I couldn't do without it, so I purchases another 'just in case'. It is identical in every way five years later. That is a good sign this is a winning design!

5.0 out of 5 stars Neat little gadget
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 20, 2015
My husband bought this for me as a little gadget. Well what a little gem this is. It is quite powerful for its size and introduces you to the micro world that we usually don't see. I managed to ID Fleas and their eggs when the cat got them and I make sure that I erradicated them from him and our home. That was a boon. Also looking at a host of other things and finding out that they look nothing like you can imagine.

There is a powerful little led light that directs at the object and you can see it with complete clarity. The batteries last for ages.

I recommend it for all sorts of reasons. It can sit in a pocket and of course a handbag so that you have it to hand when the occasion occurs. Friends and colleagues have been wowed by this simple yet effective device.

I needed to read tiny detail on small electronic components, this works OK.
Comes with batteries included and 2 LEDs (very bright), the device is very small will and easily slip into your pocket.
I don't believe the magnification claim but for under £2 it's still good value and gets the job done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for 6 bucks
Reviewed in Canada on January 13, 2014
This is a tiny microscope, more like a pocket loupe.
I doubt if the magnification is 45 times, may be about 10 or 15 x.
I'm giving 5 stars because for the price, the optics clarity is good and the led light is handy when it is dim. Overall not bad for 6 dollars. It served my purpose of looking close at jewellery, for cracks & chips on stone.

When compared to a 30X loupe that I recently bought the magnification of this mini microscope is not that great (it should be around 10 or 15x as I suspected) so reduced the rating to 4. Also, The adjustable barrell is just a gimmick I guess.
