To say the movie revolves around the four members of a family is to miss its point. Three of the four family members, each blessed in their own way, struggle to live in the world while their spirits seek to discover their eternal home--the one which defines us all. Their struggles begin to manifest when the daughter wins the local spelling bee. The dad abruptly takes an interest in his daughter's endeavors, maybe for the first time ever, and basically shuns his very close relationship with his son. This provokes the son to strike out on his journey of discovery through non-traditional means. The wife, a beautiful soul, is plagued with a husband who does not understood her; she cries out in silent trips to other people's houses in her attempt to hold and construct the light of her vision. The beautiful soul of the daughter, blessed by both her parents, as well as her brother, reaches for Union that her family may be whole. Through his daughter's love, the husband, receiving an epiphany of his own, comes to understand the destruction of his arrogance. Although many may not be able to relate to the dynamics of this film, those who do will most certainly want to experience viewing this more than once. Highly recommended for those whose heart is bursting in their search for G-d.Read full review
Of course the book was better and the movie attempted too much but I liked it more than most of the critics. If it sends the viewer to the book, it has done its job. Jewish mysticism, a psychological attempt to reconstruct the broken shards of life, the search for God taking various forms: not easy stuff for film. Still, a noble failure.
I found this film French in nature, a bit weird, a bit exciting, a bit tragic. Is an interesting mix of character, almost a family ununited, in their attempt for self serving vices. A gifted litter girl ties them all together in a unique way. French films tend to be bittersweet. This is that. Not everyone will like it, but it did the trick... it entertained me. MR
Makes me laugh out loud a lot!!

Although having great cast, the story was meaningless. Just having lots of cliche, it was just a waste of time to watch it!
