Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Their legendary 1967 debut, featuring for What It's Worth !

Amazon.com

Although the Byrds receive more credit (and perhaps rightfully so), Buffalo Springfield, in some respects, were just as responsible for the country-rock and singer/songwriter explosion that continued through the full flight of the Eagles and later mutated into '90s neo-country. This 1966 debut reveals the precocious songwriting talents of both Neil Young and Stephen Stills; check out Stills's Beatlesque "Sit Down, I Think I Love You" and Young's weird (for '66!) but classic "Burned." Their next album, Again, is widely considered their best effort, but this is an excellent debut, made even stronger with the addition of their hit, the single-only "For What It's Worth." The CD offers both stereo and mono versions of each track. --Bill Holdship

Classic recordings of early Stephen Stills and Neil Young never reproduced digitally. The only public source for the 9 minute version of Stephen Stills' "Bluebird". This two record set includes:
Side One: "For What It's Worth", "Sit Down, I Think I Love You", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", "Go And Say Goodbye", "Pay The Price", "Burned", "Out Of My Mind".
Side Two: "Mr. Soul", "Bluebird" (9mins), "Broken Arrow", "Rock And Roll Woman".
Side Three: "Expecting To Fly", "Hung Upside Down", "A Child's Claim To Fame", "Kind Woman", "On The Way Home", "I Am A Child".
Side Four: "Pretty Girl Why", "Special Care", "Uno Mundo", "In The Hour Of Not Quite Rain", "Four Days Gone", "Questions".

This such a wonderful album the beginning of Stills and Young both wrote most of the songs some great songs that would become some classic songs of the time. I first picked this up when it came out I think I may have heard For What It's Worth and this was one of my favorite groups at the time. Like many people I would continue to follow their guys in the many groups that would grow from this group. Think about Stills and Young both playing lead singing and writing in the same group. Some wonderful singing on this one but then these guys went on to be with some of the best vocal groups of our time. This is such a wonderful album I forget just how great this album is. Sad that we only have the three albums from these guys.

I first heard the song "For What It's Worth" sung by reggae singer Marcia Griffiths on her Reggae Max album she covered it in fine style under the name "Watch This Sound" I fell in love with the song on first listen and have heard it covered in fine style by other reggae artists such as Max Romeo, Slim Smith and Freddie McGregor to name a few. So after hearing so many covers I felt it was time to check out the original. I already was aware of Neil Young's solo work, but was unfamiliar with the rest of the band. Stephen Stills is on lead vocals for most of the album with the exception of a few track that Neil fronts. Buy and enjoy

Classic 1960's country rock album. Contains the megahit "For What It's Worth". This recording was hugely influential and laid the groundwork for Stephen Stills and Neil Young's future work. This is a short album, which is typical of '60's albums, clocking in at slightly over 33 minutes (limited LP space you know). Stephen Stills' vocals and guitar on this recording are great and provide him a spring board for his stint with Crosby Stills and Nash (and Young). The songwriting and musicianship here is classic sixties, that decade being hard to beat.

Although Steve Stills and Neil Young have criticized the stereo mix of the original LP this is a very fine debut by a band overflowing with talent. All of the songs, written by either Stills or Young, are uniformly excellent. There were problems during the sessions--Charlie Greene and Brian Stone, the Lp's producers, deemed Neil Young's voice "too weird" and had rhythm guitarist Richie Furay sing Young's tunes. (Furay had also written several songs for the album but his contributions were overlooked.) It doesn't really matter: Young's voice is clearly heard in the gorgeous three-part vocal harmonies. He and Stills were a formidable team, both playing some of the flashiest guitar heard on rock records at the time.

Awesome. I would recommend getting the individual albums as opposed to the Greatest Hits(which is a great album) because so many songs get lost between the cracks.
