Sturdily made. Hangs nicely from any oven rack, I imagine, mine as well, but the flat base isn't large enough to sit on top of the racks in my oven. Will sit nicely on top of a baking sheet though. I use it when baking bread and the first thing I learned is that my oven runs on the cool side - for a setting of 425F I was consistently getting 405F, and for 450F I was getting 435F. So I've learned to set my oven up a little higher from now on when baking or roasting. As to how accurate? I don't know, but at room temperature, it matches my meat thermometer whenever I check them side by side. Haven't tried them both in the oven, because my meat thermometer I think is not actuallly designed to be heated up inside the oven, only used to check internal meat temperatures outside of the oven.Read full review

I bought this based on a popular TV and internet cooking channel's seemingly expansive review and testing of several thermometers of similar design and function. This particular item was their number one choice, siting accuracy, ease of reading, and overall design. Unfortunately, the FGTHO550 fails across the board. After receiving this item, I tested it in my brand new oven with two other tried and true thermometers of like fashion over a range of temperatures from 250 F to 450 F in 25-degree increments. At 275 F is coincided with the other two gauges. From 300 F and up it's degree of error quickly approached nearly 20 F. Regarding ease of reading, it simply isn't. The numbers are small and difficult to make out. Reading them through the oven door window was impossible. Now to it's actual physical design. It's almost comical how negligent the design is. The base will not span two adjacent rungs on the oven rack. You would think this would be an obvious and fundamental factor in the size and shape of the base, but no, it will not stand up on the rack. How this passed by design engineers, marketing, sales, and every level of supervision is truly more than the average mind can absorb.Read full review

Unfortunately for all oven thermometers, accuracy is not known. I have tried four different brands on an oven that I believe is off in temperature..... None of the four different brands agreed on one temperature.

I bought this because the oven in a new stove I bought appeared to be out of calibration. I used this to test it, and Indeed it was. What impressed me was that I tested it at 350, 400 & 450 deg. At all three temps it showed the stove was 30 deg lower than the digital display 0+/- 2 deg. The repeatibility was much more than I expected.

This is an excellent, inexpensive, well-made version of a kitchen classic that everyone who uses their oven should own. When a cake gets burned on top, do you blame the recipe? Lasagna not done in the middle? Bread crust burned but it's still mushy in the middle? Well, yes, it may be bad recipe instructions are to blame, or you--like me--could have an oven that is miscalculated. There's only one way to find out, and that's to use a self-contained thermometer to check. And you would be hard pressed to find one as easy to use and sturdy as this one! Highly recommended.
