The tool makes a good dimple in steel but you need to follow up with a regular center punch to make a deep enough dimple for a drill bit to stay centered.

Too weak. Won't make a decent punch mark in soft steel. Probably OK for aluminum, soft copper, etc. Got it cheap, but would NOT recommend this product if you need to center punch any ferrous metals. Seems well-built, but...NOT A STARRETT.

It’s very light but punches great.Its stronger that most punches when the adjuster is turned all the way in. Has no problem punching in aluminum and metal but stainless steel is a different story. Just to make it a little smoother.I spayed dry lube in it and it helped.
