For those learning Portuguese, this film is great. There are many instances of language basics that provide you with a little bit of insight, like any foreign language film. For example, the boy in the film is called "menino", literally "boy", by his family. A few older characters encounter this young, nameless boy and some interesting dialogue plays out where you can see a few similarities and differences between portuguese and english. The film is somewhat dark, depicting life in the Brasilian countryside, but reveals moment that are light and comical. It's entertaining throughout both moods, and mildly informative however fictional it may be. The female character in the film seduces you through the TV screen. Her character is really sweet and charming but can also literally breathe/eat fire. She and and her father are circus performers. For those interested in similar films, I highly recommend "Bye, Bye, Brazil" and "Dona Flor", which are good films from which you can learn portuguese. The films are somewhat dark and comical just like "Behind the Sun". My impression of all the films is that they sort of tease your existing knowledge of everything Brazilian -- they show you the dirt roads and run-down houses and overall cheapness or poverity that may exist, but introduce characters that you fall in love with.Read full review
