This film is based on a novel in which the male leads have a homosexual relationship. Of course, when this film was made, that premise wouldn't fly. So, officially, the audience is supposed to believe that the relationship between trapeze artists Mike and Tino is strictly platonic. This doesn't work, because Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis have amazing chemistry. They seem so devoted to each other that it's hard to believe anyone could come between them, let alone Gina Lollobrigida's character. She's a selfish, scheming liar who will do anything to advance her career. I can believe Mike and/or Tino might be sexually attracted to her, or might briefly be fooled by her manipulation. But the audience is supposed to accept that these guys have both fallen genuinely in love with her and are willing to hurt each other to hold onto her. No. As a fling, maybe, but as a permanent love interest, I just don't buy it. Mike and Tino seem smarter than that, while Gina displays no positive character traits whatsoever. This is still a great movie, but it could have been even better if it had been made when the gay subtext could have been honestly addressed. Read full review
