Good book. Reality of the addict and his family. What parents and children can suffer from and learn to realize it's a disease and just like any other it takes hard work to remain in recovery. Not half measures. I really felt for this boy, especially the father for not being able to let go and live his own life, although it's easy to relate because we want to save our children, but in the mean time lose ourselves. This will be a great book to pass on to families that I know of with the same struggles and their children. I like the fact that it explains the drug in detail and statistics are always important. Although it was interesting a bit boring and wish there would have been more story, but how much can you have with recovery, relapse, recovery, relapse. I just hope and pray the boy gets this chance around, sounds like dad is!Read full review
Beautiful Boy written by Father of a Meth addict, a great RAW and TRUTHFUL story of a Son's life of addiction from youth on.....How his addiction affected his Life, Family's Life and even affected lives indirectly of those he'd never met. A superb book and very well written. David Sheff is the author of this book and the father of Nic Sheff, the addict. Nic has written his own book, titled tweak, of his trial of being an addict to the most serious and easily found drug, meth.
I had already read this book from the library and wanted to own one for myself. I highly suggest this book for any parent of a child with an addiction, especially crystal meth. It really helped me to see how long it takes for someone to get to the point of getting help. It also helped me understand my son's addiction more. For me, personally, it helped most by helping me realize how important it was for me to get help for myself. We as a family have spent thousands of dollars on therapy, but because David Sheff wrote so favorably about Al-anon, I ventured to try it. I have found so much peace with this group and great new friends who are going through or have been through it. It's practically free, except for the one or two dollar donation I put in the basket when they pass it around. I can now sleep at night again. I am so grateful for this book.Read full review
This is a sad but realistic story about a family's struggle with a child's addiction. You won't be able to put it down once you start reading it. It's been getting more attention because of the movie out now. I read it years ago, but bought it for someone else. I ordered and started reading the son's book which is just as compelling.

Very moving story of a father's struggle with his son's drug abuse and how it affected his family's life. It details the very lows of drug addiction and what this young man did to his family from stealing his half-brother's piggie bank money to stealing from his mother and stepfather. This book paints a vivid portrait of a vicious cycle of a son in rehab and relapse and the sinking feeling in the father's stomach each time his son went missing and the phone rang. This story made clear the way each family member had to come to grips with the ups and downs of their relationship with the drug user. Well written and totally engrossing especially if you have someone like this in your own family.
